Job Description

Purpose

The Supervisor, Quality and Food Safety assists the Quality Assurance department's efforts in the continuous improvement of systems and procedures. This position ensures that all food safety and regulatory requirements are met or exceeded.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Manage team of Quality Technicians, ensuring coverage across all shifts. Ensure all quality technicians are appropriately trained and resourced to execute tasks and support production.
  • Manage team of Sanitation/Janitors, ensuring coverage across all shifts. Ensure all Sanitation/Janitors are appropriately trained and resourced to execute tasks and support production.
  • Work with Quality, Sanitation, Production, Maintenance and other departments as required to create/publish a weekly cleaning plan/schedules to ensure proper coverage to facilitate required cleanings across the entire plant
  • Generate, follow up and maintain SOPs, all checklists, QA incidents 'hold' database, work orders, QA/Operation reference notice, permanent change notice, allergen program, HACCP/Food Safety software program, hold/release tracking in Prism, monthly trending report, ingredient/packaging database, equipment calibration
  • Daily monitoring of HACCP requirements and quality standards, including QA floor coverage, and analytical
  • Provide technical expertise on daily floor QA issues and for continuous improvement
  • Identify, develop, set and ensure internal safety/quality standards and specifications based on desired characteristics as well as regulatory compliance
  • Develop and conduct training programs (GMP, CCP, receiving, shipping, new project implementation, allergen etc.) for all employees
  • Execute assigned projects in a cost effective and timely manner
  • Projects involve implementation of safety/quality requirement, new products launch and continuous improvement process
  • Support and follow up during internal and external audits (Kosher, NGP, CFIA, FDA, SQF, Health Authorities, etc.)
  • Interact and follow up with chemical and pest control service providers
  • Communicate with outside warehouse regarding hold/release procedures
  • Acts as contact person and resolves issues
  • Provide support to the R&D team as outlined:
    • Executing assigned R&D projects in a cost effective and timely manner, providing testing assistance for floor implementation
    • QA support for smooth delivery of new finished product from test to production
  • Support operations in capital projects, drive formulation of cost reduction, and ingredient consolidation or replacement projects
  • Support process and yield improvements
  • Assist in day-to-day R&D inquiries for existing SKU's manufactured in the plant including sensory for increased shelf-life products, ingredients replacements, production deviation related to formula, ingredient shortage etc.
  • Conduct daily new hire Food Safety orientations and trainings as required
  • All employees are responsible for food and safety quality
  • All employees are responsible to report food safety and quality problems to personnel with authority to initiate action

Primary Interactions:

Internal: QA, R&D, Production, Maintenance, Planning, Purchasing, Corporate QA

External: CFIA, NGP, Health Authorities, Kosher, Pest Control and Chemical Service Providers

Qualifications

  • Ability to work a variety of shifts as required (morning, afternoon, graveyard and weekends)

  • Excellent team player as well as individual contributor
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize, Organized and focused
  • Good computer skills - MS Office Suite
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Bilingual preferred- English/Spanish

Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field or diploma in food science
  • 3 - 5 years experience in a food manufacturing industry
  • HACCP Certificate

Lab and office environment utilizing the lab equipment, phone and computer frequently. Requires minimal physical effort. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where problems occur, and volumes are heavy. Tasks do not expose employee to physically unpleasant or hazardous conditions.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • $56,000 - $70,000 / year (commensurate with experience and location).
